Richard Hill has been a fixture on Islesford for almost 40 years. Community members know his many roles as T-shirt printer, fudge maker, clock maker, enamelist, webmaster.
His weaving activities have always been confined to other locations. For many years he has produced colorful, luxury-fiber rugs for floor or wall.
During October, 2009, he studied under Peruvian master tapestry weaver Maximo Laura in Arequipa, Peru. Richard is now producing tapestries of vibrant color and thoughtful design that depict areas around Islesford.

Richard is currently installing a 45 inch Newcomb loom (built in the early years of the last century) in his wife's fiber-art studio on Sand Beach Road on Little Cranberry Island to persue this new creative outlet. He also uses a Harrisville 36 inch loom in his studio in Portland Maine. Richard has designed and built custom vertical looms for his rugs.
His tapestries consist of cotton warp through the reed at 12 EPI doubled to allow weaving at 6 EPI. The weft is 6 strands of thin luxury wool combined to produce a weaving yarn that creates the dramatic color variations and changes. This technique allows Richard to create a custom pallet, mixing colors much like a painter.
